CMS to Recalculate 2017 MIPS Final Scores, Extending Targeted Review Deadline

September 2018 ~

Following the release of final scores for the 2017 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) performance period and a targeted review period, CMS identified several errors in the final score calculation process.

In July, CMS published the final scores for 2017 participants and at that time also announced the opening of a targeted review submission period for providers to request a recalculation if they believe an error was made on their final score.

After examining MIPS participants’ targeted review requests submitted thus far, the agency identified concerns with the scoring logic, including:

  • The application of the 2017 Advancing Care Information and Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances hardship exceptions;
  • The awarding of Improvement Activity (IA) credit for successful participation in the IA Burden Reduction Study; and
  • The addition of the All-Cause Readmission measure to the MIPS final score.

The agency has corrected these errors, which in turn changed the 2017 MIPS final scores and 2019 MIPS payment adjustments for some participants.

In light of this, CMS has extended the review deadline to October 15, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. (ET).

Providers can access 2017 MIPS final score and performance feedback on the Quality Payment Program website.
